In any building construction, “frame” refers to a rigid structure that acts as a skeleton for the building and eases its construction. Modern methods of construction often build framing structures offsite and set it up on site. These structures can be made from different materials, and each type fits well with particular structures.

Steel Frame

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. It is used in the construction industry because of its strength and durability. It’s easy to install and can be recycled many times, making it a sustainable building material. Steel suppliers also have many types of steel to choose from. This is why steel frames are often used for high-rise and residential buildings.

Timber Frame

Like steel frames, timber frames are also built offsite and assembled onsite. Using timber frames makes for fast construction. It’s used primarily in building domestic structures because of its high insulation properties. However, the risk of fire increases if the timber frame isn’t put up correctly.

Portal Frame

When constructing wide-span structures, it’s best to use a portal frame. Its lack of intermediate columns makes it easy to put up buildings with ample floor space like sports stadiums and warehouses. Its ability to enclose large spaces with little materials made it efficient to use this.

Concrete Frame

A concrete frame is a network of vertical columns that connect horizontal beams of a building. It’s often used to support floors, roofs, and walls. Because of concrete’s low tensile strength, it needs to be reinforced by steel bars called rebar. This type of framing is the most commonly used for any kind of structure.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the country spent $1.3 trillion on construction on June 2018 alone. This is why it’s important for building owners and contractors to know what type of framing works best for the structure that they’re going to build. Using the wrong framework may cause damage to structures, further adding to the cost of construction.
